S.C. delegation told McCain looks strong in polls

Republican pollster Whit Ayers spoke at this morning's S.C. delegation breakfast, assuring those gathered that U.S. Sen. John McCain has a strong shot at winning the presidency in November.

Polling data, Ayers said, show 18 percent of white Democrats said they would vote for McCain, while only 6 percent of white Republicans said they would vote for his Democratic opponent, U.S. Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.

"They're the ones with the base problem, Ayers said. "I think we've got a real shot at this thing."

So far 2008 has been a difficult year for Republicans, losing Congressional seats long held by the GOP. The speech drew cheers from the S.C. delegation.
