Q&A with Democratic delegates
They had a night to take it all in. So at Tuesday morning's breakfast, we asked S.C. delegates and guests about their impressions -- their favorite speakers, what they have found surprising at the convention and what they will focus on bringing home to South Carolina voters.
Kathy Hensley, delegate from Lexington
"I was impressed with Michelle Obama, the way she brought Hillary Clinton in, because I'm a Clinton supporter." She also noted Michelle's commitment to family, a theme many S.C. delegates noted: (Michelle's) first concern is for her children. They're the first thing she thing about in the morning, and the last thing she thinks about in the evening."
Bridget Tripp, delegate from Lexington
"There is a common purpose for everyone ... Barack and Michelle are here for everyone -- Democrats, Republicans, independents. We'll all become one and united."
Anita Thong, alternate delegate from Columbia (displaying just part of her convention pin and button collection; click here for a larger view)
"In spite of the primaries, we're all together. (I've seen) Hillary supporters supportive of Obama. We will unite in the end." Messages like the ones delivered Monday by Sen. Edward Kennedy help bring that home: "His determination struck me ... he came in spite of his health and did a great job bringing the message out ... (emphasizing the need for) positive results for our children."
Sarah Burns, junior at Wofford College and member of College Democrats
"I want to focus on voter registration ... particularly for out-of-state students, who think that they can't vote and can't participate." She liked what she heard during the opening convention session from Michelle Obama: "She made us feel like we knew their family ... and they're like everyone else who wants to get out and change the world."
Steve Wukela, delegate from Florence
"The convention is much more unified than I thought. I don't see the controversy. ... Hillary and Obama delegations are all eager to win."
