Competitive grants to dole out $10 million

State lawmakers have agreed to spend $10 million from a controversial grant fund to pay for local projects.

The state's Competitive Grants program has been derided by Gov. Mark Sanford as a legislative slush fund. Lawmakers can tap the fund to send thousands of dollars to local programs, such as  for festivals, water and sewer improvements and tourism  improvements.

Sanford had wanted lawmakers to save the money for future budget shortages.

Our state is in debt, and our lawmakers want to fund local projects we can't afford...excellent.

Our country is in debt yet Americans are comfortable in committing billions of dollars to companies like Haliburton in non-bid contracts.

$10M is not that much money...it's basically $2.50 per South Carolinian and the state is using this money to put back into OUR community.

as for Eric...money that could be spent on corrections officers, troopers or other far more important things than inflateables for South Congaree.

OMG and state employee's can only get a 1% pay raise, and for those of you who want to know just how much a 1% raise will get you? that gets you a whole $15.00 before taxes. Thank you state for that 2 gallons of gas and a loaf of bread well maybe not the bread. Bills will come next July 1st or maybe NOT
