Tax-free guns part of House bill
S.C. gun buyers will be able to purchase firearms tax free during the biggest shopping weekend of the year, according to a bill passed by the House today.
Second Amendment Weekend gives gun buyers 48 hours to buy guns free of state sales taxes.
The bill, which mainly deals with expempting sales tax on energy efficient appliances, contains an amendment that waives the tax on firearms from the Friday after Thanksgiving until midnight the following Saturday.

This is a good thing. Supporting our US Constitution's 2nd Amendment is important, especially now in the wake of 911 and hurricane Katrina.
I hope that law-abiding adults will consider purchasing - and committing to learning how to safely handle - their first gun.

Guns for 911 and Katrina. Was someone going to use a handgun to shoot down the planes before they slammed into the world trade center? Or use the gun as raft to flee New Orleans?

Really?,
No, of course not. That was not the point at all. Think it through...
On 9/11/01 we were attached on our own soil by an enemy that has and is planning to destroy our country. At some point in the future the Islamic terrorists may hit us again, possibly multiple cities.
If that happens then our police and military will be on full alert. Almost all of their resources will be spent protecting our cities at large. Individual emergency calls to 911 may not get answered quickly.
If a criminal has broken into your home and is about to serious hurt you or murder you - assuming you are able to dial 911 - it may take 30 minutes for the police to finally show up.
With hurricane Katrina, the police, the 911 service, the phone systems and the cell phone systems were down. The good people of New Orleans were completely helpless if criminals broke into their homes...unless the home owner had a gun.
A gun is the only weapon that someone can use to repel an armed criminal intent on killing you. Keeping a baseball bat behind the door, pepper spray, or a stun gun is almost useless if the criminals have a gun.
I hope this sheds light on my original post.

First 18 year olds in South Carolina get to exercise their 2nd amendment rights http://www.thestate.com/local/story/410185.html
Now all South Carolinans can exercise those rights without the illegal tax on those rights. Is liberty and rule of law making a comeback!?!

South Carolina Tax free weekend is a farce. Why does anyone need a tax break on firearms??? Nothing wrong with owning a gun but this is not the reason this bill was passed. The retailers jack up the prices on all the items on the list, the public shops like crazy and no one really saves any money. It only gets people to purchase in disguise of saving lots of money. Hunting supplies, wedding gowns, fishing supplies how is this back to school??? A college student's supplies are not viewed as school supplies??? Try giving a tax free month on Food in SC, a gallon of milk costs more now than a gallon of gasoline.

Food is already tax free in SC.
