Shampoo 'education' on chopping block
Gov. Mark Sanford will sign into law a bill that will remove a state regulation that requires people who professionally shampoo hair to get 1,500 hours of training.
Sanford will hold an 11 a.m. bill signing ceremony at LaSpalon in Columbia to highlight this and other regulation the governor considers excessive.

I feel that this bill could lead to a possible disaster! I am a professional cosmetologist and have been in this industry for more than 12 years. We all work hard and are required by the state to continue our education. We are also fined or other wise punished if we do not complete this education. To allow someone into our industry with less training even if it is to "only shampoo hair" would ultimaly lead to those persons attempting to do other chemical services in the salon. We as hairdressers can not be held liable for mistakes made by persons who are not fully trained. I do however feel it is necessary to complete 1500 hours of education to succeed in this business. Our education is what sets us apart from your everyday kitchen cutter. How can we uphold a professional atmosphere in our salons and spas when the state doesn't support the education that is required to do the job safely and correctly? Maybe Mr. Sanford should try our job for a day, so that he can understand that it is not as SIMPLE as it may seem.
