Sanford: Immigration bill not tough enough

Gov. Mark Sanford said again Thursday the immigration bill passed by the Senate falls short of his expectations. Sanford called on citizens to let lawmakers know of their displeasure with the bill.

The bill, which woud require employers to take additional steps to verify the employees they hire are in the United States legally, doesn't require employers to use an electronic verification system Sanford prefers. Instead, the so-called E-verify system is one of three options an employer would have. A valid S.C. drivers license and a state form to verify immigration status could also be used. 

"By stripping out the e-verify requirement last night, the Senate has taken out the single most effective part of this immigration reform bill," Gov. Sanford said. "For anyone who cares about real immigration reform, the time is now for them to email or call their Senator or House member - or better yet show up in person at the State House on Tuesday to tell their elected leaders face-to-face how they feel."

I'm a patriotic citizen, and yet I disagree with the hysteria around this issue.

Undocumented people from other countries work hard, pay taxes, and cause less crime than unemployed citizens who will not accept the jobs that these poor folks accept gladly.

Yes, we should have a better policy, but America's problems caused by an unjust war in Iraq, a disastrous (and increasingly protectionist) foreign policy, racism, poverty, predatory lending, over-use of petro fuels, and a huge and expanding federal deficit are orders of magnitude greater than the undocumented person problem.

Why not spend our efforts on the problems that threaten to kill America (and are killing Americans by the thousands) before we get distracted by an issue that only benefits those who want us to be distracted from the real problems we face?

I shocked by the blatant racism of the comment made by "Father of Two." What exactly are we to learn for a comparison of IQs? This reeks of the scientific darwinism so prevalent in an earlier period used to justify the dehumanization of blacks and to subjugate the African continent by European colonization.

The vast majority of immigrants (legal and illegal) are working hard and contributing to civil society. While we need to improve immigration enforcement and the conditions abroad that drive immigrants to this country illegally we must not allow ourselves to lapse into the xenophobia that has been so typical of American approaches to immigration since at least the 19th century. South Carolinians, of all people, should know better. Has not our racist past taught us anything?

It is funny to me that the people who oppose this bill and others like it always fall back on the idea that supporters of this type of legislation are racists or bigots. At issue here is the need to do something about a broken immigration system. No one doubts that some illegal immigrants are hard working. What supporters of this bill are looking for is a fix to a major problem. I would really like to see more action from some form of government be it federal, state or local. Opponents of this legislation should try harder to understand that we are not racially motivated and win the immigration debate with real facts instead of falling back on the race card. I believe the govenor is right about this. I also believe that dropping the federal reqirements is illegal. I don't mind working with the Mexican fellas that are here legally,but lately there HAS been an invasion in South Carolina of illegals. Things are okay today,but when we are covered up in i;;egal Mexicans I think the crime statistics will soar. SC employerers are dishonest for the most part. Why do you think the influx of illegal immigrants is a federal problem? Do they live on federal lands only? Or do they live in our state? That makes it a state problem.
I see nothing wrong with immigrants that work, but they have different values of human life, if they kill someone they can easily evade capture by returning to their home country, and usually that country doesn't support the death penalty, so justice isn't served equally. Cubans, once they reach US soil are given safe haven and granted citizenship eventually. Why?... When a pregnant illegal alien has a child in the US, the child is a US citizen automatically. Why? These laws need to be changed too.

When are the "bleeding hearts" going to wake up and realize that there are a vast number of greedy American employers who will pay $6.00 an hour under the table for illegal workers, so they will not have to pay $12.oo per hour, SS, or other benifits on these workers. These workers do NOT PAY TAXES. The majority(if not all) are on food stamps and Medicaid when illness or child birth occurs. We then are taxed to cover these costs. Conspiracy is a federal crime. We saw a news article yesterday about a gang of drug peddlers being sentenced to federal prison. One of the charges is Conspiracy to Break Federal Laws. Why do the authorities carefully pick and choose who is prosecuted for this crime? If you are poor....you are charged.PERIOD....If you are wealthy you are seldom charged. The South Carolina Small Time Deadbeat Contractors Association holds special classes for their members that teach them how to break the federal immigration laws. They call it "Exploitation of the Latin Resource". I call it a fancy name for stabbing local workers in the back.I have heard their members on construction sites tell illegals to go to North Carolina,buy a utility bill,and buy a drivers license. I think it is time to charge these local deadbeats with federal crimes. They get together and fix wages,divert workers comp..claims so injured people go untreated and get the axe,collude with state agencies to steal unemployment payments when they have layoffs.The whole thing stinks. Just once I would like to see onr of these fine,upstanding yuppies in the Armani suits do something for the people that actually pay their wages.

Illegal aliens needs to stop and it is the responsibility of the State AND Federal government to step in. They don't pay taxes, falsify their identity which keeps them under the radar from practically any criminal offenses, and don't even get me worked up on their "free" health care. They are coming to our country getting away with things and avoiding problems that most average Americans have to suffer with each day. I say we build the wall. I say we deport the illegals. And please...don't try to teach my children to speak Spanish (ahem Dora). The illegal aliens living in our country have already disgraced us enough, why have them continue to do so for our future generations?

You know there is one thing that I don't understand! How are illegals able to get SSI ? I am not even eligible to draw SSI from my child's father who passed away. He had a disability and most of these illegals I've heard of are getting it don't even have a legit disability. How come they can get it but I can't get it to help support my child?
