Poll: McCain in GOP lead in South Carolina

U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona has taken the lead in South Carolina's Republican presidential primary, according to a poll released today.

McCain leads former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee 27 percent to 24 percent, according to a Rasmussen poll. While a lead, the margin is a statistical dead heat due to the poll’s margin of error. McCain has moved from fourth to first in South Carolina since the fall, taking the lead after his Tuesday win of the New Hampshire GOP primary.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is in third at 16 percent; former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee is at 12 percent.

The good news for Thompson is that two-thirds of his supporters say they will not change their minds.

Overall, more than half of those polled said they might change their minds before the GOP’s Jan. 19 S.C. primary.

Mitt Romney is running as the conservative candidate (now); John McCain is running as the moderate Republican who compromises; Mike Huckabee is running as a Republican?

Sen. Fred Thompson is the consistent conservative. He has credibility and authenticity. Sen. Thompson is Conservative to his core - look at his record. And these conservative principles are reflected in his policies - look at where he stands ... www.Fred08.com

Sen. Fred Thompson is the best Republican candidate to challenge the Democrats for the Presidency BECAUSE he stands with Conviction for 'our' conservative principles... AND he is the only AUTHENTIC and CREDIBLE candidate who can be this Messenger, this President of the United States.

The good news for Thompson is that two-thirds of his supporters say they will not change their minds.*Presidential Politics

I had no idea our supporters had minds? Now for the bad news, Fred will be holding his last stand with the Ghost of General Custer tonight at the debate along with John Edwards....

How anyone could be for John McCain is beyond me.

I am for McCain!

McCain looks pretty dirty here
Anyone vaguely familiar with the political career of John McCain knows about the “Keating Five” scandal. For those not clear on the specifics, we’ll do a quick review:

In the midst of the savings and loan implosion of the 80s, federal auditors begin investigating the practices of S&L magnate Charles Keating.
McCain, along with four other Senators, meets with Keating to discuss ways to derail the investigation.
McCain and his colleagues meet with Ed Gray, the chairman of the regulatory board, and persuade him to delay seizing the S&L.
Two years later, regulators finally have to seize the S&L for a federal bailout, costing taxpayers $2.6 billion. In the meantime, 17,000 investors in Keating’s S&L lose $190 million.
For someone with a stainless “reform” halo, McCain looks pretty dirty here. So, what does the “straight-talker” do? Take responsibility? Apologize? Nah:

McCain defended his attendance at the meetings by saying Keating was a constituent and that Keating’s development company, American Continental Corporation, was a major Arizona employer. McCain said he wanted to know only whether Keating was being treated fairly and that he had not tried to influence the regulators…

Oh, well we have no problem, then. After all, McCain’s job is to look out for his constituents, right?

But Keating was more than a constituent to McCain–he was a longtime friend and associate…Keating raised money for McCain’s two congressional campaigns in 1982 and 1984, and for McCain’s 1986 Senate bid. By 1987, McCain campaigns had received $112,000 from Keating, his relatives, and his employees–the most received by any of the Keating Five…

Okay, so that’s pretty fishy. Still, I guess you could say that just because someone gives you money doesn’t make you best buds…

After McCain’s election to the House in 1982, he and his family made at least nine trips at Keating’s expense, three of which were to Keating’s Bahamas retreat. McCain did not disclose the trips (as he was required to under House rules) until the scandal broke in 1989…And in April 1986, one year before the meeting with the regulators, McCain’s wife, Cindy, and her father invested $359,100 in a Keating strip mall.

Cripes! This is some Tom DeLay stuff, folks. So, here we have McCain conspiring with a campaign crony to rip off shareholders and American taxpayers. What does McCain do to atone for his sins?

…he contributed $112,000 (the amount raised for him by Keating) to the U.S. Treasury.

Oh, thanks John. Now, according to my calculations, you only owe American taxpayers about $2,599,880,000.00. We’d like that in cash, please.

THIS SOUNDS LIKE THE CLINTONS? OH WAIT THERE DEMOCRAT'S. OH WAIT MC CAIN BUCKS HIS FELLOW REPUBLICANS? OH WAIT HE SIDE'S WITH LEIBERMAN(FORMER DEM. NOT REPUUBLICAN?)PLEASE TELL YOUNGER VOTERS AND TWO FRIENDS

2008 Presidential race ,They all blame it on Washington?
This 2008 Presidential race is a very important one this time around. There are a number of senators running trying to get our vote? Many say we need a change from the Washington insiders? They all blame it on Washington,That Washington is broken? But they tell us we are to pick a senator from Washington? Some say its corporate lobbyist and or big corporations

We have new senators running,We have old senators running? We have senators from both sides of the isle ,We have 22 year senators,We even have former senators? Some senators vote one way and then vote another way, senators that vote against there party Lines, to some senators that wont stand for anything and not vote yes or no? They vote "present" over 130+ times? Senators that think there is something called a "Right Way" or a "Senators Way"

We have traveling senators that some say over stayed there travel! We have other senators that have traveled abroad with the most trips traveled to the most that traveled with and even cost the most in the history of that office. Some senators make us think that traveling abroad gives them a right to this office? We have senators that snub there noses at some state saying awe "its only the first in the nation caucuses ,they don't really count" Senators that stage there winning speech Assemblies ? The every day people are not good enough that they had to stage it?

We have senators that take money from PAC'S, We have some senators that do not take money from PAC'S? We have some senators that use 527's? We have some senators that do not use 527's.We have maverick type senators telling us of the pork they stop, for an earmark they tried to stop but that the recipient still got to keep the bacon? and for the 11,000+ earmarks these senators passed in 2007

Now for the senators that are not running? We have senators that tell us to vote for this senator or that senator? we have senate leaders that pay into other senators re-election funds? We have senators that pass out earmarks only to get their re-election fund contributed to from the recipient of the earmark they gave to? We need to re-examine what we pay these senators compared to their re-election funds some may think is to much? was it us that made them millionaires or did they step out of bounds to have raises voted for themselves by themselves?

Should these Re-election funds be counted as Income? God knows we need the 22% Social Security tax that could be collected? Who votes that into law? The amount raised for this presidential race should and could be taxed at 22% as someones UN-earned income? That may fix Social Security for 5 years? Lets not stop there ,we could /should then tax money spent on re-elections? Taxes or (FEES)? Who votes this into law?

That leaves us with Mayors to chose from or Governors to also choose from? Do we pick Mayors that even found time for extra marital affairs that mayor-ed the second highest office in the land? Do We choose a one time Governor that is from the corporate world? From a state that had the largest PUBLIC WORKS PROJECT (the big dig)in the History of the US Government? Governors that you would think there talking about SPOONS? Gold, silver, bronze? Are they running for a marathon?

Or do we Choose a multi term Governor that governed both democrats and republicans and yes sometimes raised taxes with the people voting for, that was the right thing to do for the good of that state. A state that did not always run to the federal government for money , A state that did cut and did give back to the people. A Governor that has a plan to reform the tax code we have now, wonder why? the senators inside Washington do not mention to us? One has to ask if these Pacs or 527's have benefits that are hidden in this complex tax code may have ? or other re election fund tax LOOP Holes that also may be hidden in the tax code?

Could it be as simple as picking one from the center of this great land that tells the people the truth of the matter? We all know 1 person can't be All we need in a President? So when we say we need a president that wares many hats will this president we pick over ride what his defense secretary says or will he over ride what his secretary of state says? Do we Want a MAVERICK President? Do we want a President that See's temporary citizens more highly than its own citizens?

In closing I have Faith that the people of America will scrutinize the number and quality or the senators running ,To pick one that does not spend lavishly with their war chests that is only a sign of what would come as president ,to pick one that thinks the more money spent somehow thinks they are insured or deserve a victory? I would hope America Picks one that is a good steward of its war chest that believes its more the Message than the money ,after all we all want less government not a president that thinks the more money that is thrown at a problem that that is all it takes.

Thanks and don't forget to keep your stick on the ice,we are all in this together

For change to Happen we need at least 51% in both the senate and the house

Lets inform some of our younger voters that were too young to learn about this?

How can this guy have any immigration plan? In NH he said he likes his temp.lettuce pickers in AZ. they come from Mexico for 7 months and then go back for 5? We should let full time illegal immigrants those kind of job? Atleast they want to stay here all year?

He wants to avoid: Having to explain his failed immigration plan, which critics said gave amnesty to illegal immigrants.

This for the gentleman who has nothing better to do than write on a blog at the bottom of some obscure newspaper.

1) Get a job. Or if you have one, start doing it rather than writing on blogs.

2)Get your facts straight. Keating Five was terrible for McCain, he acknowledges that. But he was found not to have broken the law, and has spent his time in office combating things that could lead to other people's Keating Fice.

3) McCain is one of America's war heroes, show some respect. I don't mean that you shouldn't say bad things about him, but have some decency to make sure that they are truthful.

4) You are a despicable human being. Your statements or morally repugnant and you have little to do with facts. I would ask that you be more responsible with your free speech, instead of cheapening it for the rest of us.

Figure this out folks. Tom from Iowa sees this? Of course not. He is working as an operative for some Republican candidate. Remember Bushs tricks here in 2000. Same song, different verse

Saw Fred Thompson earlier this week at Greenville rally. Solid conservative philosophy but he shows absolutely no personal feelings or excitement or inspiration and rambles endlessly all over on responses to moderator's questions. He's mighty knowledgeable but shows he is passed his time unfortunately.

As a Tennessean supporting Huckabee, I have to say Sen. Fred was a usually conservative vote for the Republican Party, (didn't vote for both counts of impeachment) but he apparently also spent his time earning a reputation as the Tennessee Stud while serving us in DC. (Google "Tennessee Stud" + Thompson + "Daily Mail" and see how he spent his time serving us.) The Right to Life endorsement of Sen. Fred was also a mistake, since he immediately went on TV afterward saying he couldn't support the Human Life Amendment, which has been the RTL core issue to keep in the Republican Party's platform. Pro-lifers should vote for Huckabee. Conservatives, the real conservative is Huckabee, the war hero is McCain, and the 9/11 hero is Guilliani. Vote Huckabee for President as the consistent conservative!

John McCain is still fighting the Viet Nam war. Everything else proceeds from that problem. Nobody takes his contribution to that war away from him, but he did not learn the lesson that the Viet Nam war taught (invading another country under false pretexts is a recipe for disaster.) McCain is a war mongering old hawk who feels that he has a monopoly on patriotism. The fact that he is one of Bush's main cheerleaders renders him incapable of being a change agent. He is yesterday's old news. I hope that he is nominated so that the whole country can see his arguments fall apart under scrutiny.

Jason G, you have it right. No doubt that political hack is trying to pull a GeorgeW2000 dirty trick on McCain. This time around people know not to believe the meaningless blogs, the hateful and manipulative phone calls, etc., etc. McCain may have one moment with an appearance of impropriety, but every single candidate has at least some of that dirty laundry, whether its true or not. To the Romney campaign, now you know that flip-flopping on the american public will doom you even if you try to buy the nomination. Thompson, is and continues to be underwhelming. Is Rudy still in the race? Huckabee, probably the most likable person on either ticket, but Mike Huckabee is most qualified to guide Americans toward Heaven. He is not the most qualified to be Commander in Chief. Not now, not ever. McCain is clearly the most reasonable choice for America. He is the most honorable candidate hands down. He is the only person who will not take orders from any political party.

To the independent, republican, democratic voters in South Carolina. I'am a independent voter who has voted for both republicans and democratic presidential candidates since 1992. If Barack Hussein Obama or HRC win, then I will vote for John Mccain in the general election, as he is the only viable choice closest to the rest of the countries' independent voters. This country needs a leader who is strong on national defense, in these trying times. Fool me once shame on you HRC, fool me twice shame on me. Re- whitewater, travelgate, filegate, vince foster, ron brown, monica, right wing conspiracy, Iran vote, exagerated claims of gravitas. anybody but HRC

Why have people forgotten McCain's involvement in the Keating Five scandal?

Please everyone take a look at this documentary before you cast your vote. http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com/

Looking at the debate from the Repubs, it seems ol' Paul would wake up and realize he sounds like a Democrat rather than a richy-boy. The only difference in him and the Democratic Party is we are not trying to destroy all agencies of the government...

But what does Paul mean by Revolution? Let's read a story done in 2007, no less, about those ill-fated newsletters that have now come to light... again.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/5/15/124912/740

--- After his 1979-85 service in Congress as a Republican and his 1988 campaign for the presidency as the nominee of the Libertarian Party, Ron Paul returned home to Surfside, Texas and devoted himself to a variety of pursuits, one of which was his self-published newsletter, The Ron Paul Political Report. Founded in 1985, the eight-page newsletter featured Paul's extreme libertarian perspective on a number of different issues, notably crackpot theories about the Federal Reserve and the money system and a tireless advocacy of a return to the gold standard—a longtime Ron Paul hobby horse. The Ron Paul Political Report would come to feature in the stable of "underground" publications and photocopied "zines" that fed the nascent "patriot movement" that arose in the early 1990s, spurred by anger over federal government actions in Waco, Texas and Ruby Ridge, Idaho, and by fear of a supposed "New World Order." Indeed, Paul changed the name of the newsletter to the Ron Paul Survival Report around 1993 in what we may presume to be an effort to tap into the survivalist sentiments then peaking among the radical right wing. ---

His explanantion tonight really didn't answer anything and was quite evasive.

I won't even go into how fake McCain is. All I'll say is that he belongs in the Miss America pagent with those smiles.

I'm voting Ron Paul. He was a tiger at the debate! He was so much better and and had answers rather than repeating the questions over and over like the other candidates did.

If you listen, he has answers. He KNOWS. If you vote for these other guys, may you be forgiven.

I won't support McCain if he becomes president. I'll turn my back on him and join his opposition.

Nice to know that, as some political commercials are being pulled, the hatchet folks against McCain are still employed. There's Tom of Iowa (Tom, are you really in Iowa?) and Ann. But I believe that South Carolina learned its lesson eight years ago. As for Tom and the rest on his team, grow up, we are on to you and your slimy, amoral ways.

See where candidates stand on the issues. What they have SAID, and what they have DONE.

Their Voting Record means more to me then what they SAY they WILL do.

If you are Conservative, I challenge you to look at Fred Thompson's voting record and see if you agree with his votes 95% of the time like I do. His votes are consistent with what he says he will do. And his positions do not change.

Contrast that with Clinton who has voted for the war, voted against the war, said she is for the war, and said she is against the war, says she will pull the troops out, then says they will be there till 2013.

"A Friend" I completely disagree with your post above.

I too heard negative press about Fred Thompson being lazy and not excited about running for President.

Then I saw him speak at a rally. WOW! Very Impressive!

The critics who say Fred Thompson lacks energy and enthusiasm have either NOT seen him give a speech OR they have and don't like to hear a strong conservative message.

When you see a 6'5" Fred Thompson standing on a two-foot stage in a crowded room, speaking with a confident, strong, baritone voice, he seems pretty imposing. That's who I want staring down foreign leaders, not some wimp or some woman.

Fred's message isn't coming out because he got in the race late, and hasn't raised Ten's of Millions in campaign money to pay for the ads. But he is going town to town on a bus tour all over South Carolina.

I encourage ALL CONSERVATIVES to go see him when he comes through your town!

If America doesn't like Fred Thompson's conservative message, then the country has gone soft and Socialist, and is no longer Conservative.

anybody but HRC....i hope south carolina has more strict safety precautions in its voting ........so the results will show what the polls do.....lets not become the laughing stock of the world

Wife of POW Navy Pilot, Who Had Husband's Remains Sent Home By North Vietnamese in 1989, Was Lied to by U.S. Officials For Years About His Whereabouts And POW Status

Diane Van Renselaar says she still hasn't gotten the truth about her husband from the military and lawmakers, including Sen. John McCain who she claims is 'no friend' of POW families and has backstabbed them every step of the way toward getting at the truth.
31 Oct 2005
http://www.arcticbeacon.com/articles/31-oct-2005.html
By Greg Szymanski

The remains of captured Navy pilot, Larry Van Renselaar, came home in a body bag, sent back by the North Vietnamese in 1989, after his wife put up a 20 year fight against a corrupt U.S. government, concealing her husband's whereabouts as a POW for political expediency reasons.

Instead of telling Diane Van Rensaleer her husband was alive and in a slave labor camp, the lying contingent of morally irreprehensible politicians and military brass concealed his status, closing the official book on the pilot in 1978 even though credible CIA intelligence information revealed he was still alive in 1987, two years before he arrived home in a body bag.

"Larry was shot down on September 30, 1968. They closed his case in 1978. In fact, John McCain, who is a very dangerous and violent man, was the driving force behind closing all the POW files, classifying records in order to keep the truth from the families and the American people," said Van Rensaleer this week from her home in Corte Madera, California.

"McCain is even more dangerous than Bush. I don't want to see this man ever become President and that's why I want this story out because he is one of the biggest liars in our government and, by no means, a friend of the POW families.

"After backstabbing all of us, hiding the truth about the POW story, I wish they would have kept him in a prison camp for life like so many others who didn't have his military and political clout. If they lied to us about this, just think about the lies spread about 9/11 and the present-day war in Iraq?"

Van Renselaar's story is just another in a growing number of cases, showing the deceit, deception and outright lies advanced by the Pentagon, Congress and the Executive towards POW family members seeking the truth about their loved ones,

The cold, hard facts, said Rensaleer's wife, is the U.S. government has left thousands of prisoners left behind, telling family members they were "missing, presumed dead" when high-ranking scoundrel-Senators John Kerry and McCain continue to advance government lies started after World War II by then President Eisenhower.

Van Rensalaar, a leading activist for more than 30 years in bringing home POW's who still may be alive in North Korea and Vietnam, started the search for the POW truth after her husband was taken prisoner, but over the years the story has grown wings larger than expected, revealing government corruption and lies at the highest levels, including Kerry, McCain, former President George H. Bush and many others.

Her long and difficult quest of searching for the truth has opened up so many cans of political worms, most high-ranking officials like McCain and "Daddy Bush" run and hide when they see her face in the halls of government.

Perhaps it's guilt, knowing the real truth or wanting to save their political hides, but without question these high-ranking, two-faced politicians want nothing to do with the likes of Renselaar, once being on the board of directors of the National League of POW/MIA Families.

"In 1992, when George H. Bush was giving a political speech with many of the POW families gathered in a large hotel ballroom trying to get answers, I said straight to his face: 'we can help you get elected if you just tell us the truth about the POW's,'" said Van Renselaar, who added Bush basically ignored her request, but had his jaw drop to the floor when she mentioned the name of Lt. Col. William Atkins, a man who told her many sordid things about Bush, including his involvement with the Iran-Contra scandal when Col. Atkins acted as an intermediary between Bush and Oliver North.

"When I told him, again straight to his face, that 'you know Col. Atkins briefed you about many things, including the truth of the POW's,' he look at me with wide-open eyes, saying nothing, but his jaw literally dropped to the floor.

"I talked to Col. Atkins many times about CIA files he had uncovered with Oliver North about John McCain, telling the real truth about McCain's POW captivity. Also, Atkins told me he was a liaison between Bush and North, the pair traveling on Irish passports during Iran-Contra.

The Iran-Contra Affair, also known as "Irangate", took place in the mid-1980s. A political scandal of wide-ranging proportions where President Ronald Reagan's administration sold arms to Iran, an avowed enemy.

At the time, Americans were being held hostage by Islamic terrorists in Lebanon, and it was hoped that Iran would influence the terrorists to release the hostages. At the same time, Iran, which was in the midst of the Iran-Iraq War, could find few nations willing to supply it with weapons.

The U.S. diverted proceeds from the sale to the Contras, anti-Communist guerrillas engaged in an insurgency against the socialist, democratically elected Sandinista government of Nicaragua.

Both the sale of weapons and the funding of the Contras violated stated administration policy as well as legislation passed by the Democratic-controlled Congress, which had blocked further Contra funding.

Col. Atkins, who became a friend and close confident of Van Renselaar and other POW family members, was arrested in 1992 for his involvement in the Iran-Contra scandal, a twist of fate she said preventing him from testifying about the real truth about McCain and the POW lies advanced by lawmakers and the military.

"I know for a fact Sen. Bob Smith, who was trying to help us get at the truth in the Senate hearings on the POW issue, never got a chance to depose Col Atkins since he was arrested and then jailed for years over Iran-Contra," said Van Renselaar, adding it "was very strange" how Atkins was left to rot in a District of Columbia jail system until at least 1999. "They didn't want him to talk about a lot of things, but he talked to me about McCain's CIA file and many things the senator wants kept from the American people.

"People need to know the truth about McCain. He sealed his own records, as well the records of all POW's, so he could continue lying about his POW experience. He was never tortured, never in a dog-cell like the other prisoners and never deprived of food.

In fact, Col. Atkins, who died in 2001 of a cerebral hemorrhage, told Renselaar that when he and North acquired McCain's CIA file it showed he was out of the system for at least two years, being in an eastern European country instead of being in solitary confinement in a Vietnam jail cell like he has told the public.

To verify Atkins' claim, Van Renselaar said she has talked to several Vietnam POW's in the same camp McCain was s held, including Larry Larson, who told her "without a doubt I didn't see McCain for at least a year."

Further, she added John Parcels, a former helicopter pilot, and his wife, Patty, who visited Vietnam after the war, said they were taken on a tour by the North Vietnamese, who showed-off with pride the 'plush cell' in which McCain was held as well as the memorial in his honor put up by the banks of Lake Hanoi.

"Why have the North Vietnamese honored him? What did McCain tell them and how was he really treated?" questioned Van Renselaar, adding Parcels said McCain's prison cell was of a much higher standard then the other dog-cells prisoners were given.

"They gave him special treatment and it is documented he was even out of the country for two years instead of being in solitary confinement. He is lying about what happened and that is why he had his own POW records sealed for life. He was never tortured, never deprived of food and I've even learned he may even have fathered two children after having an affair with his Vietnamese nurse.

"According to my very credible Vietnamese contacts he had an affair with the sister of Nguyen Tan Thanh, a high-placed North Vietnamese official. Since they knew McCain was the son of A Navy Admiral, he was given a special nurse, Tan's sister. I've been told he fathered two sons with her, one attending the University Of Colorado, Up until now, though, we haven't been able to get their names."

Besides what Renselaar calls McCain's "pack of POW lies" about his real record of captivity, she recalls her husband saying McCain was not well-like by him or other pilots when they were under his direction before the Vietnam War when McCain was an operation's officer at a Meridian, Miss., flight-training center.

"I remember my husband saying he was not well-liked and thought of as a hot dog and a punk," said Van Renselaar. "And nothing has changed over the years. Once when POW families were outside his Senate office on Capital Hill demanding answers, he pushed his way through the crowd in a violent manner refusing to answer questions, almost knocking a POW supporter over in her wheel chair."

And last week to keep Renselaar's fight alive, as well as the entire POW issue, Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) has now taken up the cause on Capital Hill to get the truth out about the thousands of living POW's still incarcerated in political prisons around the world.

Last Friday, Rep. Paul held a press conference to revive the issue, officially sending to each legislator on Capital Hill a copy of an historic video called "Missing, Presumed Dead: The Search for American POW's," in an attempt to open new hearings, being introduced under House Resolution 123.

House Resolution 123 seeks to force Congress to investigate "all the unresolved matters relating to any United States personnel unaccounted for from the Vietnam era, the Korean conflict, WW II, the Cold War missions and the Gulf Wars, including all issues regarding MIA's and POW's.

In a portion of the video, written and directed by Hollywood producer, Bill Dumas, former Sen. Bob Smith, pushed out of pubic life, said he was convinced from the evidence that there are many men still alive in political prison camps in both Korea and Vietnam.

"We should accept the evidence and move ahead to find these men," Sen. Smith said in the documentary.
