Ugly Numbers
OK, I did it. I went to Weight Watchers.
Here are the numbers, as ugly as they are:
277.4 – My starting weight on May 10
249.6 – My low weight on Oct. 26 (27.8 pounds lost)
263.6 – My weight on Jan. 29 (13.8 pounds net loss, 14-pound gain since Oct. 26)
So, time to regroup, re-start and re-lose.
My next story appears in The State next Tuesday (Feb. 5). In it, I list several incentives I’ve conjured for myself to lose weight. A few of those are envisioning myself:
· Being able to wear a swimsuit by the end of summer without being totally embarrassed.
· Buying a new fall wardrobe from the non-plus size department.
· Getting on an airplane in April without worrying about the seatbelt fastening.
Once the story runs, I think I’ll cut out the full list and put it on my refrigerator, and maybe near my computer.
Maybe being reminded of those benefits will keep me focused on my goal of controlling my eating and losing weight.
Welcome back! Today is a new day! Don't worry about the past, we all make mistakes. Success begins in the mind - keep your thoughts on your incentives. The most important one is your health. Be realistic about your goals and plan, plan, plan! You may want to re-visit your doctor - didn't you mention a "helpful" prescription? If so, your doctor should review its efficacy now.
You can do it!
By the way - I'm blogging, too --(http://blogs.weightwatchen.com/alinakaren). I think regular blogging, and reading other WW blogs, is very helpful in keeping the mindset.

I was so excited to read your article and hear that you had chosen to give WW's a second chance....some of us have to try more before we find our way. I am a WW's member and I have been for 3 + years. I still have around 20 lbs. to lose, but its worth every step. I started out about where you are and I completely understand exactly where you are. I've found that WW's is 90% mental and 10% plan. The food plan works, there's no doubt about that. The other 90% is getting your thoughts in line and getting focused on what you really want. I use the word "you" implying all of us. I've presently lost 86.6 lbs. and to be very honest, no one noticed that I even lost any weight until I reached the 40-45 lb. mark. I don't want to discourage you. Just the contrary. You'll find that the first 40-45 lbs. will go quickly. Actually I never exercised until I lost about that much and started thinking about the way I wanted my arms and legs to look after the fact. Now exercising and using weight resistant equipment or weights in my workout program is a pleasure. Before, I wouldn't have given exercise a second thought. Its all a process, and most of it is mental. I would encourage you to get your mind set on what it is you REALLY want. Do you want to look great in a swimsuit? Feel better and have more energy? Shop in the Missy size? (that was a hard mental move for me too). Its all mental. And the mental journey that comes along with weight loss doesn't end when you get close or get to goal. You deal with other issues like shopping in the other sizes and hearing voices in your head of what you may think the other women are saying to you. I used to think (because I shopped in the plus size all my adult life) that smaller women would look at me and think that I needed to go back to the plus sizes and shop. It has taken me at least a year to get used to the idea that its where I'm suppose to be, and that's not really happeneing.
So, hang in there. I'm very excited for you on your Weight Watcher's journey. Its a long road, but worth every step!

Lezlie - how was the "first week back" weigh in?
Posted by: Karen | February 09, 2008 at 06:13 PM
I am glad you are back! Pam and Karen made some great comments. I am currently on WW and have lost 45 pounds. I almost gave up too when I hit a plateau. I didn't lose a pound for over a month! So I refocused and got back on track. I was exercising everyday, but I was doing the same thing. So I switched it up a little and increased my walking from 30 minutes to 40 minutes and added strength training . Do not wait until the afternoon, after work, to exercise. You will be too tired. Try morning exercise when you are not tired - it works! Please hang in there. When I went to my doctor to have my annual physical, she was so proud of me and my health has improved dramatically!!! Keep going - it is worth it!!!!
