If the Chicago Cubs end their century-long World Series victory drought this year, I can tell you one impression that's going to be in high demand in the Windy City:
Will Ferrell as Harry Carry.
According to The SNL Archives, Ferrell played Caray in seven sketches ... three times on "Weekend Update" ... three times as host of "Space: The Infinite Frontier" ... and once in the sketch "O.J. Simpson Punitive and Compensatory Damages Telethon". (original airdate: Feb. 15, 1997).
Guests on "Space: The Infinite Frontier" include Jeff Goldblum as astronomer Dr. Ken Waller, (original airdate: May 17, 1997) Matthew Perry as astronaut Ronald Culberston (original airdate: Oct. 4, 1997) and Joan Allen as NASA flight director Linda Ham (original airdate: Nov. 14, 1998).
P.S. Caray died on Feb. 18, 1998. The Joan Allen sketch did address that pesky mortality issue:
Linda: Well ... Senator Glenn was, um ... [ pause ] ... an inspiration ... I-I'm sorry ... Please, please forgive me for asking this, but didn't you die?
Harry Carey: Yes, I did. What's your point?
Linda: Uh.. oh.. nothing.
Harry Carey: Good!
Longtime readers of the Guesspert Web log (or "blog") might remember that a few months ago we did a salute to Ferrell's impression ... but since the clips we shared were on YouTube, that means they've since been yanked. But I found a video copy of the Goldblum edition here on Google video. I'm posting the link as a little experiment to see how long it stays valid.
But yeah, "That's why my friends call me 'Whiskers'!" is still a catch phrase around The State sports department. Stop by some time, and we'll prove it to you.
