Condolences to the Georgia Bulldog nation on the passing of UGA VI. He would have been 10 (70 in dog years) on July 22.
If you're a college football fan -- especially if you're an SEC fan -- give a howl of respect not only for the passing of the winningest Uga in Bulldog history (87-27 according to his official Web site) ... but also know that the tradition of the Churchillian
English bulldog lineage will continue.
South Carolina fans may remember that Uga VI began his reign at the Georgia-Gamecock game in 1999. And who knows, maybe if it weren't for USC's 16-12 upset in Athens last season, Uga would have had a treat at the most recent BCS title game.
Did you know that each Uga is given an eternal resting place at the southwest corner of their stadium? Click on a satellite map of the campus here so you can pinpoint it.
I've only attended one game at Sanford Stadium, but I remember walking past the memorial on my way out. A tearful Georgia fan was using the last fumes of his alcohol-fueled courage to warn away fans of the victorious visiting team from disrespecting this hallowed ground. The Bulldogs had come up short on the scoreboard that day, but this one-man honor guard wanted to make sure everyone knew that Uga worship was eternal.
Does anyone have a nomination for the best Uga shrine on the Web?
And if you've got any Uga tales from either side of the Bulldogs' rivalries, be sure to share.
My favorite trivia from Uga VI's site: The 2000 season ended in Hawaii, but due to the distance and a quarantine rule, Uga VI missed the O’ahu Bowl, marking the first time the Georgia mascot had missed the postseason game since the 1969 Sun Bowl.
